CBD Oil vs Hemp Seed Oil

What's the difference between CBD oil, hemp oil, and hemp seed oil?

Researching CBD can become very confusing when you start to encounter so many new terms in this rapidly growing market. Here, we are going to go back to the basics and define the difference between CBD oil, hemp oil, and hemp seed oil. Hopefully, getting this all straight at the beginning will simplify and make purchasing oil less confusing.
In a Nutshell...
CBD oil is also known as hemp oil and can be used interchangeably. They are one and the same. You may also stumble on the term ‘hemp extract.’  That, too, is the same.
CBD oil = Hemp oil = Hemp Extract = All the same thing
And then there is hemp SEED oil. This is where it can become confusing. Hemp seed oil is NOT CBD oil. Nor is it hemp oil. Nor is it hemp extract. However, you will sometimes see some people refer to hemp seed oil as hemp oil. Hemp seed oil is NOT hemp oil. So, read carefully.

Though there are four different terms - CBD oil, hemp oil, hemp extract and hemp seed oil - we are really talking about just two products: CBD oil (aka hemp oil or hemp extract) and hemp seed oil.

To keep things simple, we'll just use two of the terms: CBD oil and hemp seed oil.
The Difference Between CBD Oil and Hemp Seed Oil
While both come from the same hemp plant, Cannabis sativa, the difference between CBD oil and hemp seed oil lies in the fact that they are extracted from different parts of the plant. As you might be able to tell from its name, hemp seed oil comes from the seeds of the plant, while CBD oil is extracted from the plant’s stalks, leaves, and flowers.

The seeds of the hemp plant do not contain CBD so hemp seed oil has little to no CBD. It is important to note that hemp seed oil may contain traces of CBD because the outer surface of the seeds can be contaminated by the sticky resin oil found on the bracts of the plant. But there is not enough CBD, if it is present at all, for hemp seed oil to be used for CBD benefits.

CBD is found in the stalks, leaves and flowers of the hemp plant, so, the oil being extracted from these parts of the plant, CBD oil (aka hemp oil or hemp extract) contains CBD.
Differences in the Chemical Composition of CBD Oil vs Hemp Seed Oil
Based on the information you read above, the main difference in the chemical composition of CBD oil versus hemp seed oil is that CBD oil contains CBD.

Hemp seed oil does not contain CBD but it is rich in nutrients, antioxidants, omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, gamma-linoleic acid, B vitamins, and vitamin D. All of this makes hemp seed oil a great addition to a healthy diet.
Differences in the Uses and Benefits of CBD Oil vs Hemp Seed Oil
Benefits and Uses of Hemp Seed Oil

Because the chemical composition of CBD and hemp seed oils is different, the benefits for each is different, too. Hemp seed oil is used mainly for its nutritional benefits, because the nutritions contained in hemp seed oil can lead to health benefits. Reported health benefits include:

  • Relieving constipation
  • Providing cardiovascular health benefits
  • Modifying the immune system
  • Improving skin conditions
  • Improving gastrointestinal conditions
  • Anticancer effects
  • Antioxidant effects
  • Anti-aging effects

Hemp seed oil can be taken internally or used topically. You can take hemp seed oil by the spoonful or use it in smoothies, in salad dressings, or drizzled on foods. Hemp seed oil should not be heated as heating will change its taste and benefits. As far as external uses, some apply the oil directly to their skin, hair, or nails. You will also find hemp seed oil in cosmetics, hair, and skin products.

Benefits and Uses of CBD Oil

CBD oil is rapidly growing in popularity for its alleged medicinal benefits. There is growing pre-clinical and clinical evidence to support the use of CBD oil for an increasing number of conditions. CBD oil and CBD-derived products are being used by many for the following:

  • Epilepsy
  • Pain and inflammation
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Addiction management
  • Inflammatory skin conditions
  • Neurodegenerative conditions

You will find CBD oil being used in nutraceuticals and supplements. CBD oil is also being used in beauty products. CBD oil can be taken internally or used externally.
Buyer Beware and Read Labels
Some brands add hemp seed oil to its products, put marijuana leaves on its label, use the word ‘cannabis’ to delude you into thinking you are buying a CBD product when it really contains no CBD at all.

And some companies may also market their products as hemp seed-based to avoid Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations on cannabis- or marijuana-derived products. Definitely not legal.

As you have read in this article, hemp seed oil and CBD oil are NOT the same thing and are NOT interchangeable. Read the labels and check the ingredient list to verify that what you are paying for is what you are actually getting.

Hemp seed oil will be listed as cannabis sativa seed oil. CBD will usually be listed as cannabidiol, full-spectrum hemp, hemp oil, PCR (phytocannabinoid-rich), or PCR hemp extracts.
In conclusion...
Hopefully the difference between CBD oil and hemp seed oil is clear. If you have any other questions, please email us at chrysalisearthfarm@gmail.com and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
